Do you remember what it used to be like looking for a hotel online? Plugged into a wall socket on your desktop PC, searching for hotels at your chosen destination and then having to check their individual websites for prices and availability.

Thankfully it’s all changing with voice search.

The future of voice search

Voice search has been around for a few years now, most commonly with Siri (Apple), Hey Google (Google Assistant), and Alexa (Amazon Echo) now becoming common in our homes and on our devices.

Whilst the ill-fated Google Glass showed us a glimpse of what the future of wearables could look like, it’s the smartwatch that is really going to change how we use voice search over the next few years.

Smartwatches

As the Apple Watch continues to evolve, with the 6th generation of the wearable device being recently launched, Siri is becoming ever more useful without us having to even remove our phones from our pockets.

The availability of voice search on Googles Wear OS means that more traditional watchmakers are entering the smart device market with the Google Assistant. Watchmakers like Armani, Montblanc and Fossil are bringing wearables to markets that may have previously chosen to avoid them. This gives more importance to voice search as they become more popular.

With Amazon’s Alexa now coming on some Fitbit models, the trio of the most popular voice search engines are all now right there on our wrists whenever we need them.

Privacy in voice search

Just as hotel guests expect their privacy to be protected, so do many internet users. The increased security of iOS 14 and the recent introduction of Guest Mode on Google Assistant shows how the leaders in voice search are aiming to meet the privacy requirements of their users.

It’s never been more important to consider voice search, and as our devices become more handsfree it’s clearly the future of search as we know it.
