‘Ok Google, tell me how popular voice search is in 2020.’

Try it, you might get some facts that surprise you. Voice search, once the stuff of sci-fi fantasy, has become so much a part of many people’s daily lives that it bears stepping back for a moment and taking stock of how far we’ve come.

According to Quora Creative, in 2020 50% of all searches across the internet will be voice-based. Yes, you read that correctly. Half of all internet searches will soon be done simply by speaking. If that surprises you, it shouldn’t. The rise in the popularity (and increasing ubiquity) of voice search is part related to a couple of key things.

1. We all have something to talk to now

The proliferation of devices that are able to conduct voice searches has been something to behold. Of course Siri, Google Assistant, and so on have been sitting on people’s smartphones for years now. But add to that the increase in popularity and availability of home devices such as Google Mini and Amazon’s Echo Dot, and you start to understand the picture better. By 2022, 55% of US households are predicted to contain such a device (again according to Quora Creative). Not only that, but smart watches such as the Apple Watch have voice assistants built in.

2. They actually understand what we’re saying now

Voice search, or attempts at it, has been around longer than you might think. IBM was the first to introduce voice recognition tech in 1961(!), but to say we’ve come a long way is an understatement. It’s become as easy as talking to a very obliging friend – Google Assistant, for example, can now handle 70% of requests in natural, everyday language.

So what’s next?

In short: more talking, less typing. The Voice Search Generation is here, now. Are you ready for it?
